For one of our many mini projects in Spanish class, we were assigned the task of making our own cooking video explaining how to make our family recipe. You can learn more about our family recipes on the blog post under the Spanish section of 10th grade. The entire video had to be in Spanish which was very tough for Spanish levels one and two. I'm placed in the advanced Spanish two group so it was only tough when the lines I had to say during the video got very long. The video had to contain ten different lines all in Spanish and more if necessary. Above you can see my final video to see my family's take on lemon cheesecake.
During the time that we had to make a script, many drafts were made. Grammar was one thing that w as very difficult for me to grasp as I went through different drafts. Sofia was very helpful as I made revisions and helped me understand the reasons for my mistakes. As the time came for me to start filming a first draft of my video, I kept getting hung up on the longer lines. My mother who is a native speaker was very helpful during these times at home as she was able to help me with my pronunciation and memorization.
How you pronounce words in Spanish can be very tricky sometimes and can also mean a completely different think if said wrong. There are many different accent marks that allow emphasis on certain points of a word. It was also difficult for me when having to use proper words when described in a cooking setting. For instance, in one of my videos I said "vaso" which means cup, but I used it as Measuring cup which is actually "taza" in Spanish.
I was most proud and relieved when the filming part was over with because talking in Spanish while also cooking was a challenge for me to do. I appreciate the skills I gained from this though as I feel they will be very valuable for me during times that I might have to speak Spanish in front of a group of people or one on one situation.
If I were to do this project all over again I would most likely film during a different part of the day and maybe get someone to film for me instead of leaning the camera on various different objects that made for some awkward angles. Half of my video is very dark since I could only film in the evening which was not the best for lighting purposes. Besides strictly visuals I don't feel that I'd do much different as I am still proud of my final product.
